PS I am not a LaCie salesperson :) I will buy one when available. If you don't need the combo of thunderbolt and usb3 then there are other products on the market that may satisfy your need. This product seems pricey but pays for itself by making you more efficient. Expect videographers / sport photographers to use this product. This unit is small, lightweight, bus-powered. Thunderbolt also allows me to quickly backup to external storage. Handy having both connections on location. Why do I need it? Recent shoot took 12000 jpegs and 12000 RAW, was able to transfer them to the client laptop using thunderbolt, although most clients only have USB3. So why pay 500 over the SSD for a case + thunderbolt + usb3. People are saying it is too expensive and suggest purely thunderbolt or purely USB3 alternatives with 1TB SSD. If there are cheaper alternative with the EXACT same spec, be glad to hear :) Time, reliability +efficiency of work flow are more important than saving a few hundred $$. Say you are a working photographer with thousands of dollars of gear, say shooting at the FIFA World Cup, this drive is affordable. (USB3) handy if client doesn't have thunderbolt. Media centres lack space/pitch side rough - easily to knock gear. (SSD/thunderbolt) fastest transfer speed, essential for backup to laptop on location, quick transfer to drives at office, transferring files to client/press. Let's break this down: (1TB) useful for videographers + sports photographer that take 1,000's photos in a day. Alternatives have been proposed but not a like for like. I understand that when you price the individual components this product seems expensive. The LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 1TB SSD external hard drive will be available later this month for $949.99 USD.

The drive is compatible with both Windows Backup and Apple's Time Machine included with it is LaCie's Private-Public software, which offers 256-bit encryption. The water and dust rating only applies when the enclosure's cap is in place, however. The enclosure itself is able to withstand drops from heights up to 6.6ft., resist vibration and shocks that typically happen during transportation, and it has an IP 54 rating that means it can withstand water splashes and dust.
